Former Dressage prospect joins the Calgary Mounted Unit

A cool thing has happened to a former All Things Equine horse – Clem the big grey draft-cross has joined the Calgary Police force! Clem, now PSH Juno, was ridden by student Stephanie Bold for several years training in first level dressage. PSH Juno is a great mover, and extremely calm – so it is no wonder that when Stephanie had to sell him the Mounted Unit came to take a look! He will continue to undergo specialized training and will start walking the streets soon! So if you see a big grey out there, you know who he is, as he is the only grey in the unit! Congratulations Stephanie on Clem’s/Juno’s new career!

The Rider’s Role in Self-Carriage

The concept of self-carriage is always a difficult one for new and even experienced Dressage Riders (and others, as this also applies to many other styles of riding). The sensation of “being loose” while “being in control” is a fine balance of release and half halt that always sounds easier than it is to practice for many. This article does a good job of describing the process of how a rider can learn to allow a horse to hold its own, and through that process become more aware of the connection to the horse and how one’s body is influencing behaviour.
